Composite Analysis
I took a class that focused on the analysis of composites, specifically
carbon fiber and fiber glass. The main project for this class was to
hand lay up some composite sheets and then fabricate tensile specimen
out of them. We then tested each specimen in tension to find properties
and compare the experimental properties to analytic properties we spent
the quarter learning how to find.
Design for Environment
I took a class that was focused on the environmental impact of the life
cycle of a product. For this class we were put into groups and analyzed
a particular product throughout its life. My group analyzed a plain
leather loafer from the processing of the rubber and raising the cows
to the disposal as well as alternatives for each process and material.
The goal of the project was to see if we could take the product and
design a zero waste life cycle.
Products Liability
I took a class taught by a Professional Engineer that is the cofounder of a failure analysis company in Seattle which focused on Products Liability. This class discussed the proper steps that an engineer needs to take in order to develop and manufacture a safe product. We also talked about proper instructions and warnings that need to be part of the final package of the product. These things not only help the customer but it helps the manufacturer in the case that a lawsuit comes against them. This class taught me a lot and was a very interesting view that involved both engineering and law. We had many visiting presentors, a couple of lawyers, some engineers and an ethicist. I believe that this topic is very important for engineers to keep in mind and I am very glad that I was able to take this class.
